The Interim Director of Athletics provides short term leadership and operational continuity for a comprehensive district athletic program at the middle and high school levels. This role stewards day to day operations, compliance, scheduling, communication, and staff support in accordance with FBISD policies and UIL rules, while stabilizing systems during a leadership transition. The interim assignment is time limited and may be concluded at the District's discretion.

CANDIDACY RESTRICTION: As a condition of this interim appointment, the incumbent may not be a candidate for, express interest in, or accept consideration for the permanent Director of Athletics position for the duration of the interim assignment and the subsequent permanent hiring process.

TERM OF ASSIGNMENT

Time limited interim appointment; anticipated duration determined by the District and subject to extension/early conclusion as needed.
Focused on maintaining operations, compliance, and strategic continuity; initiates long term changes only with Superintendent approval.

Position Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


Program Leadership & Operations

Direct, manage, and supervise day to day operations of the district athletic program in accordance with FBISD policy and UIL Constitution & Contest Rules (C&CR).
Build and publish master event schedules; coordinate officials, facilities, transportation, and game administration coverage.
Maintain operating guides, calendars, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure continuity during the interim period.
Approve district scheduling and coordinate vertical alignment across middle and high schools; oversee playoff logistics.

Compliance & Eligibility (UIL / TEC §33 / Title IX)

Enforce UIL C&CR, No Pass/No Play (TEC §33), and FBISD policies.
Verify student eligibility: academic grade checks, residence/transfer, Previous Athletic Participation Form (PAPF) processing, and roster certification with principals/registrars.
Implement safety standards: pre participation physicals, HB 2038 concussion management & return to play, heat illness prevention with WBGT monitoring, lightning protocols, and venue specific EAPs with documented drills.
Conduct annual Title IX athletics equity reviews (participation, facilities, scheduling, travel/per diem) and implement corrective actions.

Facilities & Event Management

Direct operations of athletic facilities/complexes; ensure safe use, preventive maintenance, and rapid remediation of hazards.
Implement written Event Operations Plans (EOPs) for higher risk contests (crowd management, ticketing/e ticket controls, cash handling, and post event debriefs).
Coordinate approved third party facility use per district policy; provide end of season facility/equipment status reports.
Maintain capital replacement plans and life cycle inventories for major equipment (scoreboards, turf, timing systems

Communications & Community Engagement

Maintain clear communication with parents, students, coaches, principals, and district leadership; articulate FBISD’s athletics mission.
Lead proactive notices for weather delays, playoff logistics, and emergencies; maintain crisis communications templates aligned to UIL/FBISD guidance.
Promote positive public relations; represent FBISD at athletic events and community/booster functions.
Establish booster club governance standards (bylaws on file, annual training, financial reporting, fundraising approvals, and Title IX adherence).

Finance & Operational Controls

Prepare, monitor, and defend the district wide athletics budget; recommend adjustments aligned to district priorities and fiscal controls.
Implement internal controls for gate receipts, electronic ticketing, and deposits; reconcile to event manifests.
Coordinate purchasing and contracts (officials, transportation, equipment) with Purchasing; maintain vendor performance records.
Standardize inventory/procurement controls for uniforms and equipment, with chain of custody and end of season reconciliation.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Plan, assign, and direct work of assigned athletics staff; conduct performance feedback aligned to interim scope
Initiate personnel actions (documentation, recommendations) under the guidance of Human Resources and the Superintendent.
Assist campus athletic coordinators with booster club compliance, financial stewardship, and ethical use of funds.
Remain accessible for meetings to resolve conflicts or concerns involving parents of student athletes
Supervise athletic trainers/sports medicine staff coordination and ensure appropriate coverage models for practices and contests.
Qualifications: Qualification Requirements

Master's degree preferred
Valid Teaching Certification Issued by Texas Education Agency appropriate to subject and grade level of assignment required
Valid Texas Mid-Management or Principal Certification preferred
Minimum of 3 years of successful leadership as Campus Athletic Coordinator, Athletic Director, Assistant Athletic Director, Head Coach, Campus Administrator, or Director in a large, UIL-competitive district, preferred
Comprehensive knowledge of UIL rules and procedures; working knowledge of Title IX and athletic equity.
Strong written and verbal communication; skill in stakeholder engagement and conflict resolution.
Demonstrated ability to supervise, coach, and develop professional staff; strong organizational and data/reporting skills.
Knowledge of sports medicine best practices, EAPs, and incident reporting systems.
Proficiency with athletics management software (eligibility, scheduling, e ticketing) and data dashboards
Proven ability to recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing coaching staff committed to excellence and capable of motivating student-athletes to reach their full potential.
Demonstrates a championship mindset and dynamic leadership skills to build and sustain competitive, character-driven athletic programs across the district.
Skilled in designing and implementing systems that support student-athlete success both academically and athletically.
Capable of engaging in courageous conversations and making tough, strategic decisions that prioritize the long-term success and integrity of the athletic program.
Salary Range: $118,619 - $163,694
