Description/Notes: | Primary Purpose: Promote positive public relations between the school district and community. Prepare and provide information to the public about the activities, goals, and policies of the school district. Distribute pertinent information about the district and its activities to employees. Major Responsibilities and Duties: 1. Direct and manage the districts communications and public information activities. 2. Create and evaluate an annual Strategic Communications Plan and Community Involvement Plan. 3. Serve as the information liaison between the school system and the community. 4. Serve as the district spokesperson and coordinate media coverage. 5. Prepare press releases and publish articles and photos in local media and other publications. 6. Help school personnel, as appropriate, in publicizing and promoting any performances, exhibitions, displays, or special programs sponsored by the school district. 7. Provides professional communications counsel and assistance to district and campus personnel. 8. Design, prepare, and edit district publications including newsletters, recruitment brochures, programs for special events, and other publications. 9. Review and edit all district communications to be disseminated to the general public prior to final production. 10. Serve as district representative on community committees as required. 11. Ensure that public information activities contribute to the attainment of district goals and objectives. 12. Responsible for district clipping archive. 13. Oversee the quality of all district publications. 14. Stay informed of developing communication trends and techniques. 15. Speak at civic organization meetings and make presentations to classes. 16. Demonstrate awareness of district-community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs. 17. Help the superintendent develop and publicize reports related to the performance of the district and articulate district goals and objectives. 18. Implement the policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy in the public information area. 19. Administer the public information budget to ensure that programs are cost effective and .funds are managed prudently. 20. Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs. 21. Develop training options and/or improvement plans to ensure exemplary operation of the public information function. 22. Evaluate job performance of employees to ensure effectiveness. 23. Assist in recruitment, selection, and training of personnel and make sound recommendations relative to personnel placement, transfer, retention, and dismissal. 24. Secure consultants, specialists, and other community resources. 25. Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignment. 26. Annually develop and implement an individual professional growth plan. 27. Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible. Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise and evaluate support positions of the Communications Department and Partners in Education program. Qualifications: | Qualifications: Minimum Education/Certifications: Bachelors degree in English, journalism, communications, or a related field. Special Knowledge/Skills: Solid knowledge of public education Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills Demonstrated skills in writing, editing, and public speaking Thorough knowledge of media relations and public relations functions Ability to implement policy and procedures Ability to interpret procedures and analyze data for decision-making Ability to use personal computer to design and produce district publications Ability to meet deadlines Minimum Experience: Minimum of five years in journalism, media, public relations, or communications experience Three years experience working in a public school system or governmental agency (preferred) Experience in planning, implementing, evaluating, budgeting and personnel management (preferred) Experience in the open record process and education laws including FERPA (preferred) |
Salary Range: | $105,456 - $137,674 per year |
