PRIMARY PURPOSE:



The Director of Athletics serves as the district's chief operational leader for athletics, providing leadership, coordination, and oversight of the daily operation of all middle school and high school athletic programs. This position is responsible for ensuring operational excellence across the district's athletics program by coordinating athletic events, supervising program implementation, ensuring compliance with University Interscholastic League (UIL) regulations, supporting coaching effectiveness, and promoting a safe, equitable, and student-centered athletic experience.



Working collaboratively with the Executive Director of Athletics, campus administrators, athletic coordinators, coaches, district departments, parents, and community stakeholders, the Director leads the implementation of district athletic initiatives while ensuring consistency, accountability, and continuous improvement across all campuses. This position plays a critical role in developing coaching capacity, strengthening operational systems, promoting competitive excellence, and supporting student achievement through athletics.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:


Athletic Operations and Program Management

Direct the daily operation of all district middle school and high school athletic programs.
Implement the Executive Director's strategic vision and operational priorities.
Coordinate district athletic schedules, contests, tournaments, transportation, officials, and event logistics.
Ensure consistent implementation of district athletic procedures across all campuses.
Oversee athletic equipment management, facility scheduling, and operational readiness.
Monitor program effectiveness and implement operational improvements.


UIL Compliance and Risk Management

Ensure districtwide compliance with UIL Constitution and Contest Rules.
Monitor student eligibility, residency requirements, participation standards, and academic eligibility.
Coordinate required UIL reports and documentation.
Provide guidance and training to coaches regarding UIL updates and district expectations.
Assist with investigations involving athletic compliance or student eligibility.
Ensure implementation of athletic safety procedures, emergency action plans, and risk management practices.


Coaching Leadership and Staff Development

Assist with recruiting, selecting, onboarding, supervising, and evaluating district athletic personnel.
Provide coaching, mentorship, and professional development for athletic coordinators and coaches.
Establish consistent expectations regarding leadership, sportsmanship, discipline, and student conduct.
Promote alignment between middle school and high school athletic programs.
Develop leadership capacity within the district's coaching staff.


Student-Athlete Development

Promote programs that support academic achievement, leadership, citizenship, wellness, and character development.
Foster equitable participation opportunities across all athletic programs.
Strengthen pathways supporting student transition from middle school to high school athletics.
Promote a positive athletic culture emphasizing excellence, integrity, and sportsmanship.


Financial and Resource Management

Assist in developing and administering the district athletic budget.
Monitor expenditures to ensure fiscal responsibility.
Coordinate purchasing of uniforms, equipment, and athletic supplies.
Oversee inventory management and resource allocation across all athletic programs.
Recommend operational efficiencies that maximize available resources.


Stakeholder Engagement and Community Relations

Serve as liaison among campus administrators, coaches, parents, booster organizations, officials, and community partners.
Represent the athletic department at district functions and community events.
Support communication regarding athletic schedules, accomplishments, and district initiatives.
Foster collaborative relationships that strengthen community confidence in Spring ISD athletics.


Continuous Improvement and Strategic Planning

Analyze participation, operational, and performance data to identify opportunities for improvement.
Recommend operational enhancements that improve program effectiveness and student experiences.
Stay informed regarding UIL changes, athletic administration best practices, and emerging trends.
Assist the Executive Director in implementing strategic initiatives that advance district athletic excellence.


WORKING CONDITIONS:




Physical Demands

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require physical mobility, prolonged sitting, standing, walking, occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling. Frequent evening, weekend, and holiday work is required to support athletic events. Regular travel throughout the district and occasional statewide travel are required.



Mental Demands

Ability to analyze complex situations, coordinate multiple districtwide events simultaneously, interpret policies and regulations, manage competing priorities, communicate effectively with diverse stakeholder groups, solve operational challenges, and maintain professionalism and emotional control in high-pressure environments.

Qualifications: QUALIFICATIONS:


Required:

Master's Degree from an accredited college or university
Minimum of five (5) years of successful coaching experience in a PreK-12 setting
Minimum of three (3) years of successful experience as a campus athletic coordinator, assistant athletic director, or district athletic administrator
Demonstrated experience supervising athletic programs or athletic personnel


Preferred:

Valid Texas Principal or other administrative certification
Valid Texas teaching certificate with physical education endorsement
Experience supervising multi-campus athletic programs
Experience with district athletic budgeting and athletic event administration

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

Comprehensive knowledge of University Interscholastic League (UIL) Constitution and Contest Rules, Texas Education Agency regulations, and district athletic policies.
Thorough understanding of interscholastic athletic administration, event operations, scheduling, and program management.
Knowledge of athletic budgeting, purchasing, inventory management, and fiscal accountability.
Demonstrated ability to supervise, develop, coach, and evaluate athletic personnel.
Strong understanding of student-athlete development, sportsmanship, leadership, and character education.
Knowledge of athletic safety protocols, emergency response procedures, concussion management, and risk management practices.
Ability to coordinate districtwide athletic schedules, facilities, transportation, officials, and event logistics.
Strong organizational, communication, and project management skills.
Ability to analyze operational data and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
Ability to build collaborative relationships with principals, coaches, parents, booster organizations, officials, and community partners.
Strong leadership, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills.
