Primary Purpose:

Direct and manage the overall organization of the athletic program for the district. Work to provide an environment to provide each student with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular athletic activities. Ensure and oversee compliance with all State, University Interscholastic League (UIL), and local requirements.



Qualifications:



Education/Certification:

Bachelor’s/Master’s degree from an accredited college or university (Master's preferred)

Valid Texas teaching certificate

5 years of successful teaching and coaching experience

Current automated external defibrillator (AED) certificate

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Bus Driving Endorsement (preferred)



Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of overall operations of an athletic program

Knowledge of State and UIL policies governing athletics

Outstanding knowledge of coaching techniques and procedures

Excellent public relations, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Ability to implement policy and procedures

Ability to interpret data

Ability to manage budget and personnel

Ability to mentor younger and/or less experienced coaches in program

Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, parents, and staff



Major Responsibilities and Duties:



Program Planning



Direct and manage district’s athletic programs and facilities.
Establish physical and academic eligibility requirements for participation in each sport, and verify each athlete’s eligibility.
Maintain an active program that promotes good sportsmanship and student development.
Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to gauge athletic program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responsive to student needs.
Plan necessary time, resources, and materials to support accomplishment of department goals.


Instruction



Use a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and improve the abilities of student athletes in the sport assigned.
Manage and supervise athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and good sportsmanship.
Work with other members of school staff to plan and implement instructional goals and objectives to ensure the overall educational development of student athletes.


Athletic Events



Prepare and (or) approve all interscholastic game schedules along with building principals.
Work with Head Coaches to schedule competitions and plan season activities including practices, special events, and tournaments.
Arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town athletic events.
Manage district athletic operations by overseeing ticket sales, employing game officials, and ensuring preparation of facilities.
Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all athletic equipment.
Coordinate the use of all athletic facilities by non-school groups.
Plan, organize, and supervise all athletic awards programs.
Student Management
Implement district student management policies, communicate expected student behavior related to athletics, and ensure enforcement of student discipline in accordance with Student Code of Conduct, student handbook, athletic handbook, and extra-curricular guidelines.
Instruct and advise students on NCAA regulations with regard to academic requirements for scholarships and recruiting practices.
Encourage, by example and through instruction, sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation.
Establish and maintain open lines of communication by conducting conferences on vital issues with parents, students, administrators, and teachers.
Policy, Reports, and Law
Implement the policies established by federal law, state law, State Board of Education rule, UIL rules, and local board policy in area of athletics.
Compile, maintain, file, and present all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
Oversee, confirm and maintain proof of all required certifications for the entire coaching staff. To include UIL requirements, CPR/AED/1st Aid, Concussion Committee, etc…
Budget and Inventory
Administer the athletic budget and ensure that programs are cost effective and that funds are managed prudently.
Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
Initiate purchase orders and bids in accordance with budgetary limitations and district policies.
Maintain a current inventory of supplies and equipment and recommend disposal and replacement of equipment when necessary.
Approve and forward purchase orders for athletic department to accounting department.
Personnel Management
Prepare, review, and revise job descriptions as needed for athletic department.
Recruit, select, train, and supervise all athletic department personnel and make sound recommendations about personnel placement, assignments, retention, discipline, and dismissal.
Evaluate job performance of employees to ensure effectiveness. Document areas of needed improvement and meet with coaches to discuss growth plans and expectations.
Develop training options and/or improvement plans for employees to ensure exemplary operation in area of athletics.
Community Relations
Articulate the district’s mission and goals in the area of athletics to community and solicit its support in realizing mission.
Demonstrate awareness of district and community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.
Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
Support athletic booster club activities.


Other



Comply with all district and campus procedures and guidelines.
Attend professional growth events specific to your job description.
Work hand-in-hand with campus principals concerning issues dealing with athletes.
Do not allow coaches to encourage athletes to specialize in specific sports.
Encourage high levels of participation in all sports by athletes.
Other duties as assigned or deemed necessary by the superintendent.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise and evaluate the performance of coaches and support staff. Provide documentation of evaluations and growth plans of coaches to the superintendent and campus principal. Make recommendations to the campus principal concerning employment recommendations of coaching personnel.

Tools/Equipment Used: Athletic equipment, standard office equipment including computer and peripherals, and other instructional equipment; automated external defibrillator (AED); operate school bus

Posture: Prolonged standing; kneeling, squatting, bending, and stooping; frequent driving; moderate grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and reaching

Motion: Frequent walking and physical movements associated with sport(s) assigned

Lifting: Frequently light lifting (less than 15 pounds); occasional moderate lifting or carrying (15-44 pounds)

Environment: Work outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather) and inside; frequent exposure to noise; frequent district-wide and statewide travel; frequent prolonged and irregular hours; moderate exposure to vehicle fumes and work around moving vehicles

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress with prolonged and irregular hours to include weekends.
