Description/Notes: | Job Overview The Police Media Relations Specialist, under the guidance of the Chief of Police, serves as the primary communications link between the Fort Bend ISD Police Department, the District Communications team, the public, media outlets, and internal stakeholders. This position develops and executes strategic communication initiatives to enhance public awareness, promote transparency, and build trust in the department's operations. Responsibilities include managing media inquiries, creating press releases, overseeing social media engagement, producing multimedia content, coordinating public safety communications, and supporting community outreach, all while adhering to FBISD's brand, messaging, and crisis communication protocols. Position Description Essential Duties and Responsibilities Media Relations & Public Communication Serve as primary contact for media inquiries involving the FBISD Police Department and coordinate with the Chief and FBISD Communications team. Draft and distribute press releases, media advisories, and official statements aligned with district standards. Coordinate interviews and media access to department personnel, as approved by the Chief. Monitor news coverage and provide timely, accurate responses to emerging issues. Organize press conferences and public safety briefings in collaboration with the FBISD Communications Department. Social Media & Digital Communication Manage the Police Department’s social media presence, adhering to district branding and messaging conventions. Create engaging multimedia content including photos, graphics, videos, & podcasts to showcase safety initiatives, officers, and community engagement. Monitor social platforms and news outlets for reputation management and public sentiment. Ensure all public communications are fact-checked and approved before release. Community Outreach & Public Relations Develop outreach initiatives that humanize the department and highlight positive officer community engagement. Collaborate with Communications and community partners to support recruitment, safety education, and public events. Promote officer-led programs, ride alongs, and public forums. Crisis & Emergency Communication Support crisis communications during critical incidents, coordinating closely with the District Communications team. Maintain availability for urgent communications—after-hours as necessary. Adhere to SOPs governing messaging approval and crisis coordination. Support reunification and emergency response communications as directed. Internal Communication & Officer Support Provide media etiquette, public speaking, and engagement training to department officers. Draft internal briefings, newsletters, and memos to keep staff informed. Maintain archives of media interactions and public communications. Supervisory Responsibilities None |
Qualifications: | Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, or related field required Minimum of 3 years media relations, journalism, or public affairs law enforcement or public safety experience, strongly preferred Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication Savvy in law enforcement culture, public safety protocols, and media ethics Proficiency with content creation tools (video/photo editing, graphics, podcast production) High attention to detail, fact-checking, and time-sensitive responsiveness Additional Information This position involves routine risks and discomforts that require standard safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties. The position may require prolonged or irregular hours and the ability to maintain emotional control under stress. Travel to campuses, district sites, and conferences or meetings, both in and out of state, may be necessary. While primarily office-based, the role includes regular field assignments such as ride-alongs, community events, and emergency responses. This position requires flexibility for evenings, weekends, and on-call communication duties. |
