In the rolling hills of western Washington County, you will find the charming town of 300 +/- friendly, hospitable citizens. The town of Burton was established in 1870 by German immigrant families on land sold by John M. Burton, who came to Texas in the 1820's from Georgia. The Burton Post Office opened on September 3, 1870 and the Burton ISD was formed in 1878; burtonisd.net. The formation of the Burton Volunteer Fire Department in 1897 added to the security of the tightly knit community. In 1972, the town incorporated.

Downtown Burton is listed as a "Commercial Historic District" in the National Register. Burton is also one of the towns on the Texas Historical Commission's "Texas Independence Trail." Burton is home to "The Official Cotton Gin Museum of Texas." The key exhibit of the museum is the cotton gin that was built in 1914 and is home to a 1925 Bessemer Type IV diesel oil engine.
