Description/Notes: This position will be for the 2024-2025 school year.

Primary Purpose:

Provide speech-language pathology services to students as sanctioned by the State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (SBESPLA) and with appropriate supervision and training from a Speech-Language Pathologist.



Qualifications: The assistant may represent Special Education and Speech-Language Pathology at ARD meetings after 3 years of experience as an assistant in the school setting and written documentation from the supervisor.



Education/Certification:

Bachelor’s degree in communicative science and disorders

Texas license as Licensed Assistant in Speech-Language Pathology

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills

Knowledge of handicapping conditions in IDEA

Knowledge of speech-language disorders and conditions

Knowledge of augmentative communication tools and devices

Knowledge of assistive communication strategies, tools, and devices

Experience:

Twenty-five hours of clinical observation and twenty-five hours assisting experience as required for licensure



Major Responsibilities and Duties:



Therapy - At the direction of the supervising Speech-Language Pathologist and with appropriate training, the assistant shall:



Conduct or participate in speech, language, and/or hearing screening with the appropriate training and as directed by the supervising licensed speech-language pathologist.
Implement the treatment program or the individual education plan (IEP) designed by the licensed speech-language pathologist.
Provide carry-over activities to transfer a student’s newly acquired communication ability to other contexts and situations.
Collect data.
Maintain clinical records.
Prepare clinical materials.






Consultation

Work with classroom teacher to implement classroom activities to improve communication skills of students.
Student Management

Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for maturity level and interest of students.
Establish control and follow discipline procedures according to the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
Program Management

The assistant may present IEP goals and objectives that have been developed by the supervisor and reviewed with the parent by the supervisor.
The assistant may attend with written approval of the supervisor, a student’s annual review ARD if the assistant provides services to the student
Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required including maintaining clinical records in accordance with federal and state laws and regulations.
Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and board policy.
Provided a minimum of 8 hours per month supervision ( at least 4 hours direct supervision)
Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

Other duties as assigned by the Director of Atascosa-McMullen Cooperative

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals, assistive technology tools and devices, augmentative communication equipment and devices.

Posture: Frequent sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds), occasional heaving lifting (45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint; assisting non-ambulatory students

Environment: Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases; may require districtwide travel

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under pressure
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in communicative science and disorders
