Description/Notes: Direct and manage districts athletic program and facilities and instruct and coach students to develop skills and abilities to excel in athletics. Provide each student with the opportunity to participate in an extracurricular athletic activity and ensure compliance with all federal, state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), and local requirements. Direct, manage and organize the football program by coordinating coaches, and ensuring that players understand and successfully perform the fundamentals of football. Run practices, drills and prepare football players to be effective in facing opponents.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Program Planning and Instruction
1. Establish performance criteria for competition and manage athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and good sportsmanship. Model performance criteria and perform physical movements required for successful student performance of the sport.
2. Maintain an active program that promotes good sportsmanship and student development including the time, resources, and materials to support the accomplishment of department goals.
3. Establish and maintain physical and academic eligibility requirements for participation in each sport, and verify each athletes eligibility.
4. Use a variety of instructional, coaching, and media techniques to meet the needs and improve the abilities of student-athletes in the sport of football.
5. Take all necessary precautions to protect student-athletes, equipment, materials, and facilities.
6. Work with other members of school staff to plan and implement instructional goals and objectives to ensure the overall educational development of student athletics.
7. Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to gauge athletic program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responsive to student needs.
8. Establish performance criteria for competition and evaluate students athletic abilities initially and on a regular basis.
9. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the football program and make changes based on findings.
10. Encourage, by example and through instruction, sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic preparation.

Athletic Events
11. Manage district athletic operations including directing ticket sales, employing game officials, contracting athletic trainers, and ensuring preparation of athletic facilities for both male and female sports.
12. Prepare and approve all interscholastic game schedules and present those schedules to the Superintendent for final signature authority.
13. Arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town athletic events.
14. Drive bus to transport students to out-of-district competitions and transport District students as needed.

Student Management
15. Develop and maintain an athletic department handbook with procedures and behavior expectations for athletes.
16. Implement district student management policies, communicate expected student behavior related to athletics, and ensure enforcement of student discipline in accordance with Student Code of Conduct, student handbook, and athletic department handbook.
17. Accompany and supervise student-athletes during football games both at-home and on out-of-town trips.
18. Instruct and advise students on National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) regulations with regard to academic requirements for scholarships and recruiting practices.
19. Manage and supervise athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and good sportsmanship.

Communication
20. Establish and maintain open and regular lines of communication with the Superintendent, Business Manager, Secondary Principal, and Assistant Principal about things that are vital to the successful movement of the athletic program and Groveton ISD as a whole.
21. Establish and maintain open lines of communication on vital issues with parents, students, and teachers.
22. Establish and maintain an open line of communication with the Athletic Directors from schools in our district.
23. Establish and maintain appropriate and ongoing communication with the chair and members of the District Executive Committee and include the Superintendent and Girls Coordinator in decision making for committee work.

Administration, Budget, and Inventory
24. Keep informed of, implement, and ensure compliance with the policies established by federal law, state law, State Board of Education rule, UIL rules, and local board policy in the area of athletics.
25. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
26. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
27. Develop and administer a budget based on documented needs and ensure that operations are cost-effective and funds are managed prudently.
28. Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
29. Initiate athletic-related purchases in accordance with budgetary limitations, district policies, and state or federal laws.
30. Approve purchase requisitions for the athletic department and send purchase orders through the appropriate channels to the business office. When supplies are received, provide all invoices to the business department.
31. Oversee the process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all athletic equipment including maintaining a current inventory of supplies, equipment, and fixed assets and recommending disposal and replacement of equipment.
32. Coordinate the use of all athletic facilities by non-school groups.
33. Plan, organize, and oversee all activities including practices, special events, and tournaments.
34. Plan, organize, and supervise all athletic awards programs.
35. Act as the Administrator on Duty at games for both female and male sports throughout the school year and summer. Work with campus administrators to ensure all games are covered with an Administrator on Duty.

Personnel Management
36. Prepare, review, and revise job descriptions for the athletic department.
37. Recruit, select, train, supervise, and evaluate all athletic department personnel and make recommendations relative to assignment, transfer, retention, discipline, and dismissal.
38. Evaluate job performance with documentation of employees to ensure effectiveness.
39. Develop training options and/or improvement plans for employees to ensure exemplary operation in the area of athletics.

Community Relations
40. Articulate the districts mission and goals in the area of athletics to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission.
41. Demonstrate awareness of district and community needs, initiate activities to meet those needs, and use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
42. Support athletic booster club activities.
43. Be visible, present, and available at athletic events on the male and female sides of athletics.
44. Be visible, present, supportive, and available inside of the school buildings, and at events that are supportive of the whole school program.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise, evaluate, and recommend the hiring of coaches and support staff for athletics.
Qualifications: Bachelors Degree Required
Masters Degree Preferred
Valid Texas teaching certificate
Principal or mid-management certification preferred
Current first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automated external defibrillator (AED) certificate
Clear and valid Texas commercial drivers license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements (optional)
5 years of successful coaching experience required
Experience as an Athletic Director, Assistant Athletic Director, Coordinator, or Head Football Coach is preferred but not mandatory

Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of overall operations of an athletic program
Knowledge of coaching techniques and procedures
Knowledge of federal, state, and UIL policies governing athletics
Ability to instruct and supervise student-athletes
Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical
Ability to implement policy and procedures
Ability to interpret data
Ability to manage budget and personnel
Excellent public relations, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, parents, and staff

Experience:
5 years of successful teaching and coaching experience
