About You

As Managing Editor of Texas Lone Star magazine, you will bring deep expertise in assigning, writing and editing content to drive readership and engagement on issues important to public education in Texas. In addition, youll expand the reach of the magazine with smart digital strategies that will grow audience and elevate the profile of TASB across the state.

A Typical Day

Work with the Communications and Marketing Team to assign, write, develop and share magazine content.
Develop strategies to maximize the audience of the magazine by distributing content across all appropriate print and digital channels, including web, social media and newsletters.
Act as liaison between Texas Lone Star and each years TASB president; develop TASB presidents columns in each edition, as well as executive directors columns in applicable editions.

How Youll Make an Impact

Participate in regular editorial meetings to ensure magazine content is timely and relevant.
Develop digital content publishing strategies to grow magazine readership.
Serve as a key member of the Communications and Marketing strategic leadership team.
Create and manage editorial calendar for magazine content planning, creation, publishing, and sharing.
Work across divisions to coordinate and produce content that drives magazine readership and engagement.
Collaborate on social media campaigns to drive engagement and readership.
Adhere to print schedules and deadlines.
Write and edit as needed for other organizational needs.
Serve as a media spokesperson as needed.
Qualifications: Skills For Success

Bachelors degree in English, Journalism, or related field with 15 or more years of experience.
Minimum 12 years relevant work experience as a senior writer/editor in a fast-paced newspaper environment.
Knowledge and experience with the Texas State Legislative process and proven ability to develop sources within and outside of TASB for story ideas.
Minimum 15 years relevant work experience assigning, creating and editing content.
Eight to 10 years experience managing writers or content.
Ability to meet deadlines is a must.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Knowledge of publishing processes, procedures, and techniques.
Ability to assign and edit content, graphics and visuals.
Knowledge of printing, reprographic and publishing resources.
Knowledge of management principles and practices.
Knowledge of human resources concepts, practices, policies, and procedures.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals. Ability to evaluate and edit the content, structure, and format of a range of written material.
Ability to foster a cooperative environment.
Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
