Primary Purpose:

The Special Education Coordinator coordinates special education programs, teachers and aides, cluster assessment staff and other programs as designated by the Director. Coordinate other non-special education programs and services assigned to the department.
Qualifications: Qualifications

Education/Certification:

Texas Teacher Certificate with endorsement or specialization in Special Education

Master’s degree in education administration or related field

Principal certification preferred




Experience

Five years’ experience as a classroom teacher

Three years teaching experience in a Special Education setting

Campus leadership experience preferred



Special Knowledge /Skills:

Knowledge of federal, state and district policies, procedures and regulations regarding special education and students with disabilities

Knowledge of the curriculum, grades PK through 12

Knowledge of various special education eligibility conditions and the challenges to learning of each

Ability to develop and implement professional development training

Basic computer/technology skills

Strong organizational and communication (written and oral) skills

Ability to work cooperatively with staff, students and parents

Ability to adjust to and be flexible in a multitude of situations



MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Represent the department on behalf of the director as needed or assigned.=
Maintain the functions of the Special Programs office in the absence of the director.
Ensure that student progress is evaluated on a regular, systematic basis, and the findings are used to make the special education programs more effective.
Serve as resource person for admission, review and dismissal committees as needed.
Obtain and use evaluative findings, including student achievement data, to examine special education program effectiveness.
Develop training options and/or improvement plans to ensure the best operation in the area of special populations.
Coordinate and provide training and support for personnel, which may include teachers and instructional aides.
Ensure compliance with federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and the local board policy in the area of special education.
Coordinate services from contracted agencies.
Recommend budget and cost estimates for appropriate programs and compile budget data as needed to apply for and secure grant monies.
Compile, maintain and file all district, state and federal reports, records and other documents required
Communicate with staff, parents and community on the district’s mission and special population’s policies and programs.
Contribute to the recommendation of sound policies directed toward program improvement.
Establish and maintain open lines of communication by conducting conferences with parents, students and teachers concerning vital issues.
Demonstrate awareness of district/community and parent needs and initiates activities to meet those needs.
Serve as administrative liaison to coordinate district Homebound services and special transport services including ESY.
Make sound recommendations relative to personnel placement, transfer, retention and dismissal.
Monitor instructional and managerial processes to ensure that program activities are related to program outcomes and use these findings for corrective action and improvement.
Serves as a specialist for the District in one or more of the following areas: behavior, autism, curriculum, life skills, early childhood, or transition
Maintain a consistent professional demeanor and appearance
Ensure compliance with the Texas Educator’s Code of Ethics
Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job
Perform other duties as may be assigned.

Equipment Used:

Office equipment – computer, printer, calculator, multi-line telephone, software programs and peripherals, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position.
Communication equipment – radio communication equipment, cellular telephone
Video monitoring equipment


Working Conditions

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals

Posture: Prolonged Sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions, frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching

Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 20 pounds)

Environment: Frequent district travel, occasional statewide travel

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress; occasional prolonged and irregular hours.

Salary Range: $67,366.00 to $96,940.00 Annualized
