| Campus Description: | Harwell Elementary opened its doors in 1942 as part of a post–World War II school expansion in Lubbock, prompted by population growth and the opening of Reese Air Force Base. Named after Chris Harwell, a passionate advocate for education and early community leader, the school has grown alongside the city it serves. Over the decades, Harwell has expanded multiple times, adding classrooms, a library, kitchen, gymnasium, and air conditioning to support its growing student body. Today, Harwell Elementary serves approximately 480 students in pre-K through fifth grade, with 30 classrooms and six portable buildings. The campus is home to a thriving Spanish Bilingual Dual Language Program, which helps students become bilingual, bi-literate, and culturally aware. Instruction begins with 90% Spanish and 10% English in the early grades and balances to 50/50 in upper grades. Harwell is also proud to be an AVID campus, equipping students with the skills and confidence to succeed in school and beyond. |
