Description/Notes: | JOB TITLE: DEAF EDUCATION INTERPRETER WAGE/HOUR STATUS: NON EXEMPT PAY GRADE (STIPEND): CD1 (+$5,500), CD2 (+$6,500), C3 (+$7,500) DAYS OF DUTY:187 Days IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: RDSPD COORDINATION DEPARTMENT: SPECIAL EDUCATION JOB SUMMARY: Provides equal access for hearing impaired students to all areas of public education and to facilitate communication between students, general education teacher, school personnel, and school related personnel ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Signs spoken communication to the hearing impaired student withinthe interpreting situation • Voices signed communication from hearing impaired to others within that situation • Reads lessons in advance and checks for new vocabulary, researches signs and establishes new signs • Familiarizes student with new sign vocabulary and maintains list of new signs as established • Explains role of interpreter to school personnel and the rights of the hearing impaired student • Performs related duties as required MENTAL DEMANDS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting Motion: Frequent walking Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds) Environment: Work is located in a classroom environment; must have ability to move from one location to another throughout the district; regular exposure to noise Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION: • High school diploma or equivalent required • Additional training beyond high school in interpreting for the deaf required • Six months to one year experience as an interpreter preferred • Must be certified by the Board for Evaluation of Interpreters and/or Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or similar • Associate’s degree in this area preferred SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: • Skills in signing and voicing communication involved in the situation properly using various sign systems. • Vocabulary adequate to communicate on level needed. • Knowledge of any area of study the student chooses to take to understand lessons and properly convey information. • Ability to maintain rate of speaker/signer and to communicate in the mode of sign language best understood by student. • Understand and utilize Code of Ethics and National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. Ability to read and write.
