We are seeking an exceptional Executive Director who is passionate about supporting Texas public schools and possesses a unique blend of leadership, advocacy, and strategic thinking skills. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic and visionary leader capable of navigating the complexities of school finance and legislative processes while effectively engaging with stakeholders at all levels.

Reports to: President and Board of Directors

Location: Austin, Texas (Flexible Schedule & Remote Work Available)

Hours: Full-time, exempt at 40 hours per week with flexible scheduling


About the Organization:
Founded in 1997, the Texas School Coalition is a leading advocacy organization committed to championing the interests of students, schools, and communities as we work towards a school finance system that balances sustainable state and local investments in the best interests of students and taxpayers. We work to ensure that Texas public schools receive the support and resources they need to thrive. Our coalition comprises dedicated school district leaders, educators, and advocates in communities subject to Robin Hood recapture who share a common goal of advancing public education in Texas.
Qualifications: Background, Skills, and Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree or higher.
• Experience with and a comprehensive understanding of the Texas Legislature and legislative process.
• Proven experience in engaging with legislators and school districts, with a pragmatic approach to building alliances and navigating political landscapes.
• Knowledge and understanding of the complexities of Texas school finance.
• Adept at distilling complex content, such as school finance and legislative processes, into clear, concise, and engaging messages.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate concepts in simple terms and serve as a compelling spokesperson for the organization.
• Customer-focused with a genuine commitment to serving the needs and interests of member school districts.
• Authentic, kind, and approachable, with the ability to build genuine relationships and foster trust among diverse stakeholders.
• Integrity, energy, and proactive leadership style, with a track record of galvanizing support and driving results.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to oversee operations, manage staff and contractors, and effectively allocate resources.
• Relational, competitive, and strategic thinker, with a commitment to building coalitions and fostering collaboration.
• Willingness to travel and engage with member districts, attend conferences, and represent the organization at various events and meetings.


Core Job Functions:

Leadership & Management
• Oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization, including managing staff and contractors.
• Form and maintain alliances with other organizations to advance shared objectives and initiatives.
• Regularly communicate with members regarding issues of importance
• Retain member school districts and recruit new members to the organization.
• Propose an annual budget and monitor finances.
• Plan and facilitate membership and board meetings, as well as other organizational events.
• Conduct communications responsibilities, including engaging with media outlets, responding to inquiries, and providing data analysis.
• Market, promote, and advocate for the goals of the organization through various forums which may include social media, blogs, website, and talking points.
• Oversee any litigation efforts in which the organization may engage.

Legislative Advocacy
• Represent the organization's interests with state leaders, legislators, and agency personnel.
• Develop and execute legislative goals and objectives in collaboration with the board of directors and member districts and advocate for achievement of those priorities.
• Track legislation and legislative committee hearings, and provide analysis and recommendations to the board and member districts.
• Serve as the primary spokesperson and testify on behalf of the organization as needed.
• Maintain a grassroots network and engage the community at large through various outreach efforts.

School Finance Expertise
• Monitor news, trends, and developments in school finance and legislative matters at the statewide and local levels.
• Develop educational resources and materials to inform legislators and the public about school finance issues.
• Conduct informative presentations on school finance and legislative issues for various stakeholders.
• Serve as a thought leader on school finance policies at the local and state level.
Salary Range: Salary range of $150,000 to $180,000 commensurate with experience, with room for growth.
